Does having health insurance make paying for medical cost more affordable for the average diabetic? Yes! There are two types of insurance available: private health insurance, which includes group and individual health insurance, and government health insurance, like Medicare and Medicaid. All insurance helps diabetics and their families greatly by covering a majority of the expenses of the medication and equipment. A scholarly article from Medicare.gov states that Medicare covers continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) that are approved for use in place of blood sugar monitors for making diabetes treatment decisions, like changes in diet and insulin dosage, and diabetes-related supplies (“Medicare’s Coverage of Diabetes Supplies, Services, & Prevention Programs'' 24). Families who cannot afford diabetes are not likely to be able to afford good insurance that covers most of their diabetic expenses which can be challenging and frustrating. It is strongly recommended that diabetics in Illinois have insurance to help cover medications and equipment. Getting insurance helps save money. Every individual, including diabetics, needs insurance that helps them with their medical expenses. This significantly reduces costs for families and individuals.
